Slow-motion video of a millipede walking shows a traveling wave in its legs progressing from rear to front of its body. A specific network of neurons called central pattern generators (CPGs) produces the sequence of automatic muscle movements. This rhythm repeating over time is called metachronal rhythm. Most arthropods walk this way, but the millipede's plenitude of legs makes the pattern clearly visible. Music by KRON.
