Ever seen caffeine crystallize under the microscope? What about Vitamin C, Liquid Crystal, or Nylon? Humans manipulate the materials in this video to make technology, consumer products, even the coffee we drink. Phase transitions of matter result from melting, cooling, and recrystallization of liquid crystals, adipic acid, urea, and pure caffeine. Stop-motion animation and video. Microscopy filmed using an Olympus optical microscope and a vintage macro bellows system. The field-of-view is 3mm wide.

Ferrofluid
Frictionless ferrofluid becomes magnetized in the presence of a magnetic field. Developed as a liquid rocket fuel for NASA in 1963, ferrofluid is an oily black fluid full of suspended nano magnetic particles. The liquid itself assumes the shape of magnetic lines of force. It forms spiky peaks and...

Nano Plans
A free-form exploration of computer-aided designs (CAD) for nanoscale construction. These digital blueprints are used to manufacture miniscule nanostructures as intricate as the Eiffel Tower. Their repeating fractal-like octagonal design imparts great strength and flexibility, resulting in one of...

Computer Chip
Vintage scanning electron microscopy of a 1980s computer chip. The images were created through the excitation of electrons rather than by the reflection of light. Hues of color were created with rare in-microscope 'lighting' using 3 electron beams. Magnified hundreds of times, the semiconductor s...
